Well... This is my first post in this community, so aside from saying that I'm quite new to playing the bass (I saw the light after six+ years of violin... about four years ago), I just passed a "rank" test earlier today. I played Alessandro Scarlatti's Sonata #2 in C minor along with an etude from a Simandl. Anyone else hate 3-octave scales (which are fun, but a pain) and double-stopped scales in thirds? *Raises her hand* Then again, anything with "scale" in the name makes me cringe... I get to work on Marcello's Sonata 4 in G minor for an upcoming audition~

I have to preform a senior solo this year and I'm trying to think of showie pieces that have orchestral scoring. So far I have thought of: E. Grieg Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra in a minor Stuart Sankey Carmen Fantasy after Bizet Koussevitsky Concerto Dragonetti G major Bottesini b minor
Got any other ideas?

Hello...everyone? Well whoever still reads this anyway. Name's Lauren, and I play...the piccolo and flute actually. When I go to college, I'll be double majoring in music performance and music education.
But now to the point of why I'm posting here. Earlier this week I decided to teach myself the string bass. No particular reason, I was just sitting in my high school's band room and I looked at the bass lying on the ground in the corner where our 'bassist' leaves it and decided, Hey, I think I'll try making noise on that thing. Our school actually doesn't have an orchestra program; we don't have a string teacher, though the band director actually conducts a county-wide orchestra on Wednesdays, which I play (first chair flute and piccolo) in. Everyone whom I've told about my new musical endeavor has been a bit skeptical- not that they think I can't do it, just that "Isn't it easier to learn on electric bass first?"
I did actually read a post on here about that, and I've decided that whether or not there's any truth in that, I don't care; I picked up the upright because I like the sound and the look of it, not an electric bass. I barely hear it though; our "bassist" at the school isn't particularly good, and we haven't had any bassists in the orchestra for the past two years. I've come to the conclusion that I'll just trudge through it and see what happens.
Any suggestions on anything? I'm not really considering buying one yet (it's really only been five days since I first picked it up), and I thought I'd see what happened with me and an instruction book (and maybe the band director and/or the bassist) before looking for a teacher.

Hello everyone out there in Livejournal land. I'm posting this several places so sorry in advance if you get it more than once. I'm looking to find information on violin repair. Mostly places you can go to learn about it. Summer programs are the best. Internships are alright too.\

Hello, again!
I'm the composer that posted some time ago, asking about the playability of a passage in a scherzo I was composing. Have I recently told you all how much I love double-bassists? Hahaha, anyway, I'm wondering which of you can play pizzicato and jazz well enough and have rather good forms of recording your instrument at home. It has to do with a flash animation which needs music. Please comment at all if you're even curious; it might end up interesting you, and maybe a musical relationship could be formed. (Credit would be in order, of course, especially since the animation will be going into a teletoon competition.)
Thanks very much.

5:26 pm - A Humbling Exercise
|

Here's a humbling exercise for all you bass players out there. So one my biggest self criticisms about my playing is my time feel. My time... sucks. Really badly in fact. It's far from what I would consider "solid" and very far from what I would like it to be. So my teacher gave me this exercise. You set up a drum groove in Finale and have it repeat for at the very least 5 minutes. You play a repetitive groove over it without ever modifying it. The object of the game is to make the bass drum disappear. Now here's the humbling part. After it's repeated for 4 or 5 minutes, you drop in 2 measures of rest where you keep playing your bass-line and the drums lay out. You repeat that section a couple times. In the next section have the drums drop out for 4 measures. Then 8 measures. Here's an example. I transcribed the drum groove off of Steely Dan's Peg from the album Aja. Enjoy:

So when Rufus Reid was here I took him to Starbucks between rehearsals. While we were hanging out I told him about my bass's string tension issues. He asked me about my bridge alignment and said he'd have a look at it, but never got a chance to before he left. This afternoon I decided to screw around with my bridge and noticed something strange. It's very screwy. Check it out.

7:33 pm - The Double Bass Part
|

Hi,
I'm currently writing a scherzo for orchestra as a piece in my composition profile; I'm sending it to a conservatory that teaches composition and orchestration. I've written a sort of leitmotif melody, and whilst that's being played on the clarinet (A), a counter-melody is being played by the double basses, the bassoon, the contrabassoon, and the 'cellos. I know it's more than playable with the three last mentioned instruments, but I'm doubting its playability with the double bass. I'm posting here a picture of the excerpt's music sheets, and a MIDI version so that you may listen to its hectic melody.
Keep in mind that this is for a professional orchestra; and if you're a student, I'd greatly appreciate it if you told me if you could play it and if you think a pro could. If it's not possible, then I'll change it slightly to better accomodate the fingering.
Thanks a lot.

Looking for double bass or "stand up bass" teachers in Northern California, primarily Sonoma County and with a little luck in Santa Rosa...
Or if you know the best place for me to start looking?

Ok, so I've got this little problem.
I'm about to audition for colleges coming up this February, and I have absolutely no clue where I am in comparison to other bassists.
I'm in about my second week of learning thumb postion right now.
The piece that my teacher gave me to learn next is Marcello's Sonata in a Minor.
The last piece I learned aside from Simadnl Etudes was a Sonata in d Minor by Correlli, arranged by Dragonetti.
That's about where I'm at now.
Oh, and I just purchased a new upright as well! Its a shop bass from Shank's String Instrument's, if you've ever heard of them. They're in a small town outside of Harrisburg, PA. Michael Shank does some awesome work. I'm in love with this new bass.
And I'm looking into West Virginia University, Duquesne, and Penn State for Music Education, maybe double on performance, but I don't know if I'm good enough yet or not.
Any comments would be awesome... I'm really at a loss right now.
Thanks.
Also, what pieces did you guys use for audtions, who were bass majors?

7:40 pm - Teacher questions

If you are a double bass teacher, please indicate the following: 1) Where/when did you train? Are you still in school? 2) Where do you live? 3) How much do you charge? 4) Where do you teach (your house, a store, a school, etc.)? 5) Are you full time or part time? How many students do you have? 6) How do you recruit students? 7) Anything I've missed?! I am a teacher, as well as a student at Temple, studying with Rob Kesselman of the Philly Orch. I've studied with Ranaan Meyer, a recent Curtis grad, and Hal Robinson, principal of the Philly Orch. I will be moving to Philly and want to set up a studio somehow, and I want input on who charges what, etc. so that I can determine a fair rate for myself. Thanks for everyone's help, have a good one.
